They Lied to Us in Sunday School is a riveting read which effectively destroys the blind spots anyone may have regarding the Christian religion.
The author, Ian Ross Vayro, has studied Classical Ancient history and Archaeology and has personal experiences with the Christian Church and a lifetime interest in Theology.
He writes as one who asks questions that most Christians would not entertain by themselves. By that I mean more than one or two questions.
There is a plethora of material here requiring answers and Vayro leads us through to many surprising and satisfactory results.
The book begins by asking twenty questions surrounding the popular paradigms of Jesus and the scriptures then goes on to enlarge the argument of ‘valid myths’ in existence within the church, dealing with everything from Adam and Eve in the Garden to the notion of Jesus as a Saviour, to the idea of who or what God is.
He does so in an often humorous style, yet never failing to bring his points across strongly. One is left wondering why these questions have not been asked by mainstream followers and exactly how blind one's faith would need to be in order to give allegiance to such ideology.
Quotes from the Bible are amply used to show what a contradictory document it is, and Vayro continually challenges his readers to re-evaluate what they have been told by the Church which in many cases is not scriptural anyway.
“They Lied to Us,” he proclaims as he continues to very capably demolish bulwarks of the Christian faith by citing their mistranslations, origins and evolution.
He uses statements from history and supporting contemporary literature with copious bibliography in order to support his stance, and shows he is certainly well versed with his subject.
In fact, he has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Bible and its history that really is a joy to read.
It is not the sort of book one would read if one wants to remain happy and content with the Christian religion for it will challenge the tenets held sacred. Yet I would suggest every single Christian should read this book.
If one desires to peruse Christianity with an open mind and is not afraid of the truth, then Ian Ross Vayro provides answers to all the essential questions that must be asked of a true adherent to the faith.
I have no doubt you will laugh and cry depending on your standpoint for the revelations are sudden and continuous.
During many years of my ministry I could not reconcile the tribal, jealous, angry, vengeful god of the Old Testament with the One who is unconditional love and who Jesus claimed to be his father.
Until I realised that my faith was indeed blind I never began to question. So, one question leads to another and another. You will find many of the answers within the covers of this book.
They Lied to Us in Sunday School gives us the promise of more really good stuff to come from this author and I personally can’t wait.
